CONCERNS ABOUT HEART DRUGS Clot-destroying drugs given to heart attack victims can increase the overall risk of death, particularly in patients at least 80 years old, searchers at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care have found. Their study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, suggested that guidelines covering the use of such drugs as streptokinase and tissue plasminogen activator should be applied more selectively and perhaps revised to minimize side effects like bleeding or strokes. The study was based on a review of 2,659 heart attack patients admitted to 37 Minnesota hospitals from 1992 to 1996.
