Mumps:
Schools Are Facing an Epidemic
Liverpool

Hughes, Gareth
[03/06/2002]
In North Wales, an outbreak of mumps has been detected. So far, 11
suspected cases of the disease have been reported, and health experts
have warned that the disease will probably infect a lot more people. The
outbreak is the first of its kind in the area since the second dose of
the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine was introduced for
children eight years ago. As a result of the outbreak, over 500 children
in North Wales are being vaccinated. Public health consultant Dr.
Richard Roberts notes that because of their age, many secondary school
students will have only received one dose of MMR, and he recommended
that parents who are not sure whether their children have received a
second dose should bring their children in for the shot, which would be
safe.
