The World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday that an outbreak of meningitis in Burkina Faso infected 201 people, with 36 deaths, in the week of Feb. 4 to Feb 10. Burkina Faso's meningitis outbreak was deemed an epidemic by the WHO, because more than 10 cases per 100,000 inhabitants occurred in one week. In an attempt to stem the outbreak, health officials have launched a mass vaccination campaign in the Diebougou district of Burkina Faso. The nation, with a population of over 10 million people, has 946,500 doses of meningitis vaccine for the effort.
