"Liberia: UNICEF Responding to
Crisis, Airlifts Relief Items to Liberia" Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (03/04/02)
Thirty-five tons of
emergency relief supplies--including vaccines, high protein biscuits, emergency
health kits, and plastic sheeting--have been shipped to Liberia by UNICEF following the
displacement of more than 75,000 Liberians due to ongoing fighting in the
country. The supplies cost about
$190,000 and are being distributed by UNICEF and its partners where they are
most needed. Speaking at a recent news
conference, UNICEF Liberia representative Cyrille Niameogo noted an increase in vaccine-preventable disease
among those displaced, who are mostly women and children under the age of five
years, and he said that UNICEF will spend about $600,000 on continued relief
supplies and education about health and sanitation.
