“Japan to Donate $500 Million to Afghanistan for Child Vaccines” Kyodo News (home.kyodo.co.jp) (02/27/02)

Japan’s charge d’affaires for Afghanistan, Kinichi Komano, signed an agreement with UNICEF to formalize their donation of $500 million in support of a broad immunization project.  The program is aimed at immunizing 90 percent of the children between the ages of six and 12 years old against measles.  UNICEF officials note that Afghanistan is one of the 14 nations in the world where the measles vaccination rate is less than 50 percent.  The program will also extend polio vaccinations to over 5 million Afghan children.
