"Japan Gives UNICEF $2.3 Million to Fight Polio in DR Congo" Agence France Presse (www.afp.com/english/home) (03/22/02)
An agreement between Japan and UNICEF netted the fight against polio in the Democratic Republic of Congo $2.32 million. UNICEF will be able to buy 16 million doses of the polio vaccine, plus pay for refrigerated containers, equipment transportation, and a public awareness campaign with the funds. A Japanese donation in 1999 enabled campaign workers to vaccinate 12.3 million children under the age of five years after the U.N. Secretary General's call for a time out from the civil war that erupted in 1998.
