February 2, 2000: A large proportion of the Chinese
migrant boat people
who arrived in British Columbia last summer are chronic carriers of
hepatitis B, the Canadian Medical Association Journal reports.
September 17, 1999: Now you can
view the proceedings
of a consensus conference on the management of viral hepatitis sponsored by
the Canadian Association for Study of the Liver and Health Canada. Topics
include the epidemiology, natural history, and treatment of hepatitis B and
C patients, as well as a myriad of hepatitis related issues and concerns.
July 13, 1999: According to a recent study published in
the July issue of HEPATOLOGY, the monthly peer-reviewed journal of the

Interferon alpha is effective in the treatment of chronic
hepatitis B in adults and is approved for this indication in the United
States and several other countries. Its safety and efficacy has not been as
carefully evaluated in children.
This trial at
several centers in Canada, Europe and the United States examined the use of
interferon alpha in children between the ages of 1 and 17 years with chronic
hepatitis B.

August 23, 2000: This week,
experts recommended
that all babies get the first of their three doses either during the first
week of life or between 1 and 2 months of age.
April 21, 2000:

lab may help to keep patients with liver disease alive while they wait for a
liver transplant, according to a report presented this week at the
Experimental Biology 2000 meeting.

May 18, 1999: Testifying before a House subcommittee
investigating vaccine safety, federal
officials said the
use of the hepatitis B vaccine has been monitored for 15 years, and it has
not been proven to be the cause of any deaths and is only rarely linked to
serious side effects.
