BBC Worldwide Monitoring;

[03/08/2002]

Disease experts in Ethiopia say that the meningitis epidemic in Chalma, Decha and Chefa, in the Kefa Zone Southern Peoples' State, has begun to spread to nearby districts. Nearly 200 people have been infected in the outbreak, and three people have died. According to Bekele Kidane, the disease prevention and control head of the directorate, a lack of vaccines has hindered officials' efforts to vaccinate school children.
