Concern rising number of dementia cases will strain health system

A new report predicts the incidence of dementia in Australia will rise by 254 per cent in the next 40 years causing a crisis in health care.

The report, by the Institute of Health and Welfare, is being discussed at a national meeting of the Alzheimer's Association in Adelaide this weekend.

The association's executive director, Glen Rees, says there is a critical shortage of services and resources for people with dementia.

He says better strategies need to be developed so people with the early stages of the disease can stay at home.

The association also says there are continuing restrictions to access to appropriate medications, which can delay progress of dementia symptoms
