The rate of
child mortality declined in Russia last year, according to Russian Health
Minister Yuriy Shevchenko, as the government increasingly focuses on disease
prevention. Shevchenko noted that good results in vaccination were attained in
2001, and the number of typhoid and dysentery cases decreased. Shevchenko noted
that beginning on April 1 of this year, a health survey of all children under
the age of 18 will be initiated by the government in keeping with its policies
regarding disease prevention and providing enough medicine
