“Central Sudan Cease-Fire Helps Polio Vaccination Campaign”

Dow Jones Newswire Online (www.djnewswires.com) (03/12/02)

On Tuesday, more than 470 Sudanese health care workers took advantage of a truce in the nearly two-decade-long civil war between Sudan’s government and southern rebels to vaccinate young children against polio.  Thanks to the ceasefire, the house-to-house polio vaccination campaign—which targets 189,000 children in the south-central Nuba mountain region—is likely to be successful, says Sudan’s health minister and acting governor of South Kordufan state Bashir Ibrahim.  Nationwide, health officials will attempt to vaccinate more than 5 million children against polio.
