"CDC Launches 'Global Strategy" to Fight
Epidemics"
Reuters Health Information Services (www.reutershealth.com)
(03/22/02)
A new plan, called "Protecting the Nation's
Health in an Era of
Globalization: CDC's Global Infectious Disease
Strategy," has been launched by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). The plan, which is designed to reduce the global threat of infectious
diseases, comes after Congress gave the organization a half-billion dollar boost
in funding. The key points of the new plan include: strengthening assistance to
other nations whenever disease breaks out; expanding early warning global
networks; keeping research active; and maintaining cooperation between the CDC
and partners. The plan also calls for the creation of an International Emerging
Infections Program in developing countries to help them strengthen national
resources and train local health care workers.
