"Armed Against an
Outbreak of Flu"
Canberra Times (canberra.yourguide.com.au/home.asp) (03/06/02) P. 3
Canberra health officials--fearing
an outbreak of the potentially deadly Moscow, New Caledonia, and Sichuan flu--have ordered about
25,000 doses of flu vaccine for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). ACT Chief Health Officer Dr. Paul Dugdale emphasized the importance of flu shots for
high-risk patients, including the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
Annual flu vaccinations will be given free of charge to indigenous people aged
50 or older and others aged 65 and older. Dugdale said
the program would also encourage pneumococcal
vaccination for indigenous people over the age of 50 and meningitis and measles
vaccination for individuals between the ages of 18 and 30.
