"Zimbabwe: Two Million to Be Vaccinated Against Measles"

Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (06/17/02)

Between July 2 and July 9, a one-week program in which almost 2 million children in Zimbabwe under the age of five will receive immunizations against measles and vitamin A supplements will begin as a follow-up to another measles vaccination program carried out in 1998.  The program is being conducted by the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare with assistance from UNICEF. As a result of expanding populations and health personnel shortages, the measles immunization rate in the country has dropped by between 2 percent and 3 percent, and next month's vaccination week will hopefully get the country back on track in terms of measles coverage, says Deputy Minister of Health and Child Welfare David Parirenya-twa.
