"Vaccine Requirements for Schoolchildren Relaxed"

Associated Press (www.ap.org) (06/24/02)

Schools across the country are relaxing their vaccination requirements due to the vaccine shortage.  Over the last few months, vaccines for common child illnesses such as mumps, measles and rubella have waned due to manufacturing problems. Though not all states are experiencing the supply shortage, many school districts have adjusted their vaccination policies to accommodate students. Currently, Prevnar, which protects against infections such as meningitis or pneumonia, is the least available vaccination in the country.
