U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Vanderbilt Evaluating Frozen Smallpox Vaccine"
Associated Press (www.ap.org) (06/24/02)
A Vanderbilt University study will explore whether frozen supplies of smallpox vaccine are still viable with and without dilution. The forgotten vaccines were recently located by Aventis Pasteur. Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices member Dr. William Schaffner feels that the Vanderbilt research is necessary to assess whether the United States has an adequate smallpox vaccine stash to defend itself against an epidemic. The project will be the first undertaken by the university with a National Institutes of Health bioterrorism grant.
