"Uganda: Health Ministry to Launch Immunization Revitalization Plan" BBC Worldwide Monitoring (www.monitor.bbc.co.uk) (06/15/02)

Uganda's ministry of health announced that hepatitis B is being added to the regimen of vaccines given to children to combat six killer diseases as the nation seeks to revitalize its immunization program across 10 districts.  According to the Uganda National Expanded Program on Immunization (UNEPI), nearly 2 million people in the country are infected with hepatitis B, which is 100 times more infectious than HIV.  UNEPI statistics also show that immunization uptake dropped to just slightly above 50 percent in 1998 from 82 percent in 1995, leveling off at 62 percent currently.
