"U.N. Officials Call Cease-Fires in Burundi to Allow Children to Be Immunized" Associated Press (www.ap.org) (06/13/02); Niyoyita, Aloys

A four-day cease fire between two rebel groups in Burundi, called for by the United Nations, will allow more than 4,000 health care workers to immunize about 3 million children in the country. Officials plan to give out 3.3 million doses of the measles vaccine, 628,000 doses of the polio vaccine, and a large amount of vitamin A supplements.  Two years ago, after the immunization program in 1999 failed to reach about 50 percent of Burundi's children, a major epidemic of measles occurred in the country, with 20,000 children becoming sick.
