"UN Calls for Major Investment Into AIDS Vaccine for Africa" Agence France Presse (www.afp.com/english/home) (05/30/02)

Health agencies of the United Nations assert that the effort to develop an AIDS vaccine for Africa needs an infusion of $233 million.  The money would be used to bolster research facilities and scientific expertise on the continent. Research for Africa only accounts for 1.6 percent of the $2.5 billion dollars spend annually on researching new pharmaceutical products.  The African AIDS vaccine situation will be discussed at an upcoming Cape Town, South Africa, meeting of donor governments, scientists, international agencies, and the pharmaceutical industry.
