"Time Is Running Out for Scientist-Backed AIDS Vaccine in Carlsbad, Calif." San Diego Union-Tribune (www.uniontrib.com) (06/02/02); Crabtree, Penni

A company founded by Jonas Salk, the scientist who developed the first polio vaccine, is on the verge of bankruptcy.  The Carlsbad, Calif.-based biotechnology company Immune Response Corp., was set up in 1986 to try and create a therapeutic vaccine for AIDS.  The company came up with a vaccine called Remune; however, Remune has been the subject of considerable controversy, with numerous disputes over aggressive advertising and the

clinical study data that has been used.   Immune Response's best

chance of survival right now is if Remune receives approval from the government in Thailand to use the drug as a stand-alone therapy to treat the estimated 1 million HIV patients in the country.
