INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"South Africa; Test Delays for HIV Vaccine"
Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (06/20/02)
While tests of an HIV vaccine are imminent, the first experiments will probably not involve the HIV subtype most commonly found in South Africa, subtype C. However, the South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative (SAAVI) believes that testing of a vaccine against HIV subtype C will begin in South Africa by 2003. The sites that are to be involved in the trial, in Durban and Gauteng, are prepared for the activity, but SAAVI Director Dr. Tim Tucker said that production of the vaccine has been pushed back by six months. Tucker noted that because the testing sites are prepared for use, SAAVI might use them to test other subtype vaccines, though none would directly benefit South Africans.
