U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Smallpox Vaccine Decision Ahead"
Associated Press (www.ap.org) (06/17/02); McClam, Erin
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices plans to gather this week to explore whether to make smallpox vaccinations more readily available to the public. At the summit, a panel of 15 health experts will weigh the prudence of widespread inoculation given the dangerous side effects that can result from the smallpox vaccine. Among other things, the panel will consider whether to expand vaccinations to the entire community near an outbreak or to the entire nation, and what precautionary steps to take if such an emergency ever occurred.
