Phase I clinical trials for Nabi
Biopharmaceuticals' nicotine vaccine Nic-VAX will involve 20 nonsmoking, healthy
volunteers in Pittsburgh. If the vaccine is successful, the vaccine will then
ask for Food and Drug Administration for permission to move onto phase II
studies, where smokers would participate in a trial to determine if the drug is
successful at treating addiction. Nic-VAX encourages the body to create
antibodies to nicotine, which is highly addictive, that soak up nicotine before
it reaches the brain, according to Nabi's vice president of quality, regulatory,
and product development, Robert Nasco. The Nic-VAX clinical trial is being
funded by a $4 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
