Since January, at
least 59 mild cases of measles have been counted in Kenya's Rift Valley among
children between the ages of eight and 15 years, says Dr. Kipruto Chesang, the
Provincial Medical Officer of Health. The Ministry of Health has consequently
deployed an immunization drive in the area, focusing on some 3.8 million
children aged nine months to 15 years, according to Chesang. Chesang says the
ministry has allocated 4.4 million doses of measles vaccine for the immunization
drive that started June 6, and it will hire some 3,700 health workers from the
private sector to assist the campaign.
