"Invasive Pneumococcal Disease in England and Wales"
Archives of Disease in Childhood (adc.bmjjournals.com) (06/02/02) Vol. 86, No. 6, P. 403; McIntosh, E.D.G.; Booy, R.
The number of deaths caused by invasive pneumococcal disease
(IPD) in England and Wales is thought to be greater than the figure reported to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). A recent study theoretically applied the implications of diagnostic tests to determine that the number of yearly deaths attributed to IPD in children aged 1 month to four years was 43 or more. Yet over a 10-year period, ONS has reported an average of 13 fatalities annually. The researchers conclude that the death rate could be reduced by as much as 61 percent by using the 7 valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
