"NSW: Vaccine for Herpes Not Far Away, Says Expert"
Australian Associated Press (AAP) (aap.com.au) (06/04/02); Skatssoon, Judy
Speaking at a sexual health conference in Perth, a University of Texas researcher reported that a vaccine against herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) may be only four years away. The collaborative effort between the United States and the Westmead Hospital's Sexually Transmitted Infections Research Center in Sydney, Australia, involves a vaccine developed by GlaxoSmithKline. A recent study found that the vaccine protected women who had not been exposed to HSV-1, or oral herpes, against genital herpes, but it had no effect on men, according to Westmead's director, Prof. Adrian Mindel. In an effort to come up with an improved second- or third-generation vaccine, a final study, involving about 7,500 women, will begin soon in the United States.
