The Global Alliance for Vaccination and
Immunization (GAVI) has collected nearly $960 billion dollars since its
formation in 1999 and said that funds were already being provided to 60 of the
world's poorest nations--80 percent of the countries the organization initially
targeted. Bosnia-Hercegovina,
Comoros,
the Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, North Korea, and Somalia are six
more countries whose application for aid was approved during GAVI's recent board
meeting this week held at the Pasteur Institute in France. According to GAVI,
childhood inoculations remain inaccessible to nearly 30 million newborns
worldwide and that at least three million die from vaccine-preventable diseases
at the rate of nearly 8,000 per day.
