"Europe Soon to Be Declared Free of Polio"

For the past three years, none of the 51 countries in the European Region has experienced wild polio virus transmission, which could soon lead to the World Health Organization (WHO) pronouncing the region free of the disease.  The WHO's European Regional Certification Commission will analyze the area's ongoing poliovirus containment before declaring the region polio-free. The last confirmed case of indigenous transmission was recorded in Turkey four years ago.
