"Ethiopia: Meningitis
Outbreak Said to Be Contained in South" BBC Worldwide Monitoring (www.monitor.bbc.co.uk)
(06/06/02)
A meningitis outbreak
in Ethiopia is now contained in seven zones, according to the country's Health
Bureau of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples State (SNNPS).
Containment and control of the meningitis outbreak was achieved by vaccinating 1
million people in Sidama, Welayita, Gamo Gofa, Hadiya, Kembata Tembaro, Kefa,
and Dewaro, said SNNPS' head of Communicable Diseases Prevention and Control
Department, Meskele Lera. Surveillance of the area is ongoing in case the
outbreak, which infected 1,273 people and took the lives of 70 in eight months,
reappears, Lera said.
