"EU, WHO Boost Joint Fight Against Killer Diseases"
Reuters (www.reuters.com) (06/07/02)
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Commission
(EU) have become stronger allies in the fight against AIDS and other killer diseases, according to EU Health Commission David Byrne, who noted that the two have mutual goals. WHO chief Gro Harlem Brundtland met with EU development, health, trade and research commissioners last week in Brussels to discuss contagious diseases, over-priced drugs, and other critical health concerns. In the meantime, the EU--having already committed some 700 million euros ($661.6 million) to the AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria fund--said it plans to invest 200 million euros into genetic and biotechnological research in developing nations.
