Last week the Centers for Disease Control held a meeting in Atlanta to
discuss the current and future use of smallpox vaccine in the United States.
Between now and June 20 (the date of the ACIP meeting) there will be other
meetings held in different parts of the country to discuss the policy. Below is
the agenda and the dates and locations of the meetings
If you are available to attend any of these meetings, they are open to the
public. There will be time for public comment at the end of the day but it will
be on a first come-first served basis. NVIC has been invited to make a
presentation at each of the meetings. If you would like more information on
smallpox and the policy questions being considered go to
www.cdc.gov and
click on smallpox plan. You will have an opportunity to voice your opinion.
Please go back to the NVIC website and review the special report on smallpox.

There are several things to consider:
1- Anyone who recieves the vaccine will shed the virus for up to 21 days and
could spread the disease.
2- The vaccine has many side-effects and causes death. The newer vaccines
being produced will not be tested for safety and effectiveness because there is
no disease anywhere in the world.
3- At high risk for vaccine reactions are immune suppressed/compromised,
pregnant women and people with eczema and their close contacts.
4- Ring vaccination is a targeted approach to vaccination. A double ring if
formed around the infected person. The immediate contacts are vaccinated and
then the contacts of the contacts are vaccinated. For ring vaccination to work,
100% of the people in the ring must be vaccinated.
