U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"CDC Lifts Restriction on Tetanus, Diphtheria Boosters After Aventis Builds Up Supply" Reuters Health Information Services (www.reutershealth.com)
(06/20/02)
Aventis' vaccines arm Aventis Pasteur has produced enough of the tetanus and diphtheria vaccine (Td) that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) can lift its year-long delay on Td boosters. The shortage was caused by Wyeth-Lederle, the only manufacturer of the Td vaccine, discontinuing its product in 2001 with Baxter Hyland Immuno Vaccines discontinuing a similar product in 2000. Adolescents and adults who did not receive Td boosters due to the shortage should seek the immunization from their healthcare providers, says the CDC's Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report. Health care providers should make an effort to recall those patients whose immunizations were deferred because of the shortages.
