Four public meetings will be held to provide
Americans with information on smallpox and the smallpox vaccine in the wake of
fears related to bioterrorism, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). The CDC will also seek comments from health care
professionals about the use of the smallpox vaccine. The meetings will be held
in New York City and San Francisco on June 6th, and in St. Louis and San
Antonio, on June 8th and 11th, respectively. A CDC survey last month showed
that physicians have limited knowledge of the potentially harmful side effects
of the smallpox vaccine which can include encephalitis, infections, lesions, and
even death.
