President Bush on Wednesday put his signature on
a bill designed to improve U.S. efforts to prevent and respond to future
bioterrorist attacks. The law calls for the expansion of the country's
stockpile of smallpox vaccines; provides funding for states to modernize
equipment; mandates the hiring of more food inspectors; and seeks to improve
communication between front-line health providers and government health
officials. The law will raise the total amount approved for fighting
bioterrorism to more than $4.6 billion in federal money, with Congress set to
determine the exact amount later this year.
