U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Poll: Four in Five Americans Would Give Up Some Freedom for More Security" Associated Press (www.ap.org) (06/11/02); Brown, Jennifer L.
A recent email and telephone survey of 934 citizens across the United States revealed that 77 percent believe that all Americans should be immunized against smallpox, 70 percent favor having to carry fingerprint identification cards, and about one-third felt it would be wise to make it easier for authorities to access private email and telephone conversations if it means heightened personal security. In addition, 500 people in New York City, Washington D.C., and Oklahoma City were polled for comparison with the general survey, and this study showed that 8 percent of Americans are extremely worried and 31 percent are somewhat worried that themselves or family members will be harmed or killed in a terrorist attack. While the levels of fear in Washington, D.C., and Oklahoma City were close to the national average, 19 percent of those surveyed in New York said they were very worried and 34 percent said they were somewhat worried.
