“The Winners”
Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com) (04/10/01) P. A17
The proposed 13.5 percent increase in the National
Institutes of Health’s (NIH’s) budget would bring the institutes’ total budget to
over $23 billion. The $2.75 billion
increase would enable NIH to increase funding for the Office of Research on
Women’s Health, the new National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities,
and AIDS research. In addition, NIH
will use $42 million to develop smallpox and anthrax vaccines under an anti-bioterrorism
initiative administered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
