One dead, others infected from cortisone shots

June 8, 2001 Posted: 2:34 PM EDT (1834 GMT)

WALNUT CREEK, California (AP) -- Cortisone injections contaminated with a strain of non-contagious meningitis bacteria killed at least one man and infected three others, Contra Costa County health investigators said.

Investigators said a total of 16 patients received cortisone injections into their spinal cords at Sierra SurgiCenter in Walnut Creek on May 29.

Of those patients, a 47-year-old man died within 24 hours. Another patient in the group died within the last week, although doctors have not definitely linked that death to the bacteria.

Seven others in the group have been hospitalized. Three of the seven were diagnosed with meningitis, an inflammation of tissues covering the brain and spinal cord. Two others have symptoms of the infection.

The disease poses no risk to the community because it is not contagious, said Dr. Wendel Brunner, Contra Costa director of public health. The Sierra SurgiCenter has stopped the procedure.

Authorities say it is unclear how the cortisone was contaminated with the bacterium, which is unrelated to the highly contagious meningococcal meningitis blamed for two recent deaths in the San Francisco Bay Area.
