Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, goodwill ambassador
for UNICEF, will visit Somalia for seven
days to draw attention to the country's high infant and child mortality rates,
low immunization coverage levels, and the general decline of the economy. Only
about 40 percent of children under the age of one year have been vaccinated
against polio in Somalia,
notes a UNICEF statement. Kuroyanagi will tour Somalia's education, youth, and
health projects and raise money to help the war-torn country with its
humanitarian crisis.
