A five-year
HIV vaccine trial that will involve 16,000 people between the ages of 20 and 30
will be the world's largest HIV vaccine trial to date, according to Thailand's
Department of Communicable Disease Control advisor Prayura Kunafol. The trial,
which will be officially launched this coming Monday at the 14th International
AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain, involves combining
two vaccines over a period of six months that could prove to give users life-long
protection from HIV. The trial--a joint effort between the Thai government and
the U.S. Military HIV Research program, along with Aventis Pasteur and VaxGen--will
begin before year-end in the Thai provinces of Chonburi and Rayong.
