Hepatitis A cases are on the rise in Singapore in large part due to raw or undercooked cockles.  The National Environment Agency said that 21 cases of hepatitis A have been reported in the last three weeks, versus 11 cases in all of 2001.  The agency believes that many people are contracting the virus from eating raw or poorly cooked shellfish, primarily cockles.  Less than half the population of Singapore has been vaccinated against hepatitis A.
