Almost 1,000 students between the ages of seven
and 16 suffered fevers, nausea, vomiting, and, in a few instances, heart
infections after receiving an encephalitis B vaccination in northeast China in
late June, according to a Heilongjiang province city health official. Of the
8,300 children who were vaccinated against the disease, over 900 have been
hospitalized, the official said. Initial tests found nothing wrong with the
vaccine, she said, but samples are being sent to Beijing for further
investigation. As a result of the incident, Chinese authorities have arrested
the director of the Mishan Epidemic Prevention Station and a deputy chief of the
city Education Bureau and charged them with negligence.
