"No Problems in Tests of Malaria Candidate Vaccine"
Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (07/19/02)
GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals has developed a candidate malaria vaccine, and tests and research on it in Mozambique's Manhica district are proceeding as planned. The RTS,S/AS02 vaccine has already been studied in four other nations, and researchers in Manhica report no adverse situations so far. Mozambique Prime Minister Pascoal Mocumbi notes that this is a good opportunity for Mozambicans to train in the vaccine research field. The vaccine tests began July 1, and so far 60 children have been vaccinated: 30 with the malaria vaccine and 30 with a control vaccine for hepatitis B. Researcher Ricardo Thompson says that the current research is testing the vaccine's safety.
