"Nigeria: NPI to Strengthen Routine Immunization"

Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (07/12/02)

A $6.9 million grant from Global Alliance for Vaccines over the next two years will pay for Nigeria's National Program on Immunization (NPI) to increase its immunization coverage of childhood vaccines from below 50 percent to 80 percent by 2005, according to national coordinator and CEO of NPI Dere Awosika. NPI also hopes to make immunizations a routine experience for Nigerians in order to reduce morbidity and mortality.  Currently, low immunization rates are blamed on irregular supplies of vaccines, poor transport conditions, lack of record keeping practices, low staff morale, and insufficient information in the population database, Awosika said.
