"New Vaccine Requirements Aimed at Nevada's High
Rate of Hepatitis" Associated Press (www.ap.org)
(07/03/02)
In a move aimed to stem rising cases of
hepatitis A in Nevada, the state health board has passed a rule requiring that
all children enrolling in public and private schools in Nevada be immunized
against hepatitis A and B. The requirement marks the first time that students
there would be forced to seek vaccinations shots for the infectious viral
strains before entering school. With over 21 cases per 100,000 people, Nevada
has one of the fastest-growing hepatitis A and B populations in the country,
exceeding the national average of 10 cases per 100,000. Nevada offers free
hepatitis A and B shots for children in low-income families.
