"New Findings Raise the Prospect of Vaccine Against Ulcers"

Dow Jones Newswire Online (www.djnewswires.com) (07/25/02)

Researchers say new findings about ulcer-causing bacteria may help scientists develop a vaccine to prevent ulcers from forming. Researchers at Thomas Boren of Umea University in Umea, Sweden, have discovered that Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria that causes ulcers, attack the stomach by latching onto cells that are supposed to build up the body's immune system.  Based on this information, researchers believe that scientists may be able to develop a vaccine to block the bacterial agents.  Douglas E. Berg of the Washington School of Medicine says the findings provide clearer insight into how the human body responds to infection and how bacteria handle it.  Researchers also believe the information from the study will explain why H. pylori infection seems to become milder but then gets worse.
