Malaysian health officials announced Monday that
a meningococcal meningitis situation is under control. The disease has taken
the lives of three people in Malaysia over the past five months, and a
nationwide meningitis alert was issued Sunday. Health Ministry Director-General
Tan Sri Mohamed Taha Arif noted that health officials are working to contain the
disease, including screening more than 500 students, under guidelines set by the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A total of 92 students who
were in close contact with the victims were given chemoprophylaxis to protect
against meningococcal meningitis.
