Lower haemoglobin levels in women are not due to iron deficiency
Lower haemoglobin concentrations in women are not due to iron deficiency,
according to Waalen and colleagues (p
137). Theyreport the findings of their ongoing study in patients
attendinga health appraisal centre in San Diego which involved
25 559 healthy,white participants aged 26-99 (12 731 men and
12 828 women). Theyfound that mean haemoglobin concentrations were
greater in menthan in women at any ageand
that there was a 10 g/l differencein mean haemoglobin concentrations
between men and women aged26-55 at any given transferrin saturation
or serum ferritin concentration.
