"Italian AIDS Vaccine Tests to Start in Autumn"

BBC Worldwide Monitoring (www.monitor.bbc.co.uk) (07/23/02)

Human trials of an experimental AIDS vaccine are slated to begin this fall in 100 volunteers in Rome and Milan, led by researcher Barbara Ensoli of the Italian Superior Health Institute. Ensoli's tat-protein vaccine is considered ground-breaking, as it reflects a fresh approach to fighting HIV very much in contrast to traditional research that has sought formulas designed to bolster the body's immune system's ability to fight off the disease.  Her vaccine attempts to block the spread of the virus and prevent the reproduction of infected cells by targeting the tat-proteins Ensoli says the virus has to have in order to take hold and spread.
