"Insurer Ends Practice of Using State Vaccines"

Associated Press (www.ap.org) (07/30/02)

UnitedHealthcare has stopped referring patients to Connecticut's

free vaccine program for children after state Attorney General

Richard Blumenthal questioned the legality of the practice.

Blumenthal asserted that if all insurers referred patients to the

state's free program to avoid buying vaccines themselves, the

state's vaccine supply would be severely depleted.  Earlier this

month, a UnitedHealthcare spokesperson noted that the state

immunization program is free to Connecticut children and that

charging for vaccines would make subscribers pay twice.
