U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Gerberding Named CDC Chief After Her Role in Anthrax Case" Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com) (07/03/02) P. D3; Brooks, Rick
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has chosen Dr. Julie Gerberding as its new director. Dr. Gerberding, who is best known for the lead role she took in investigating the anthrax outbreak last fall, took control of the CDC's bioterrorism efforts at the end of March, when Dr. Jeffrey Koplan resigned as the agency's director. She is said to have won the respect of colleagues for her defense of the CDC when the agency came under tough scrutiny for its handling of the anthrax scare. One challenge Dr. Gerberding will face is balancing the CDC's increased focus on bioterrorism against such long-standing public-health issues as AIDS, immunizations, and smoking reduction. An official announcement of Gerberding's appointment is expected today.
